How to take care of your knitwear?
Natural fibers are made to last. A little thoughtful care will help preserve the softness, shape, and beauty of your YAPA pieces for years to come.
Washing
Refresh before washing. Natural-fiber knitwear doesn’t need to be washed after every wear. Alpaca, llama, and wool fibers naturally resist odors and stay fresh for longer, so airing your knitwear overnight or gently steaming it is often all it needs between wears. Washing less frequently also helps preserve the softness, shape, and longevity of the fibers.
When washing is needed, we recommend hand washing in cold water with a gentle detergent or baby shampoo. Soak gently without rubbing or twisting, rinse carefully, then press the garment between clean towels to absorb excess water. Reshape and dry flat, away from direct sunlight and heat. Never wring or twist your knitwear, as this can stretch and damage the fibers.
We recommend dry cleaning only when necessary, particularly for pieces that combine bold and light colors or when you are unsure about washing at home.
Pilling
Pilling is a natural characteristic of fine fibers and can appear with wear, particularly in areas exposed to friction. Gently remove pills with a fabric comb, always working lightly in the direction of the knit. Avoid pulling individual fibers or using excessive pressure.
With proper care, pilling will naturally lessen over time.
Ironing & Steaming
We recommend steaming rather than ironing whenever possible. Steam gently from a short distance to relax wrinkles and refresh the fibers.
If ironing is necessary, use a low-temperature setting and place a clean cloth between the iron and the garment. Never apply high heat directly to alpaca or llama fibers.
Storing
Always store your knitwear clean, dry, and folded rather than hanging, which can stretch the fibers and alter its shape.
Natural fibers can attract moths, so keep pieces in a breathable garment bag or storage box in a cool, dry place. Cedar or lavender can be used as natural moth deterrents. For long-term storage, check your pieces periodically and keep the storage area clean.
Repairing
Beautiful knitwear deserves a long life. Small snags, loose stitches, and signs of wear can often be repaired rather than replaced.
We encourage you to care for and repair your YAPA pieces so they can continue to be part of your wardrobe for years to come.
